Born in 1922, Sabavala has an artistic style of impressionist and cubist texture. He studied in the world best art colleges i.e. Sir J.J. School of Art in 1944, Heatherley School of Fine Art, London (1945-1947), in Academie Andre Lhote, Paris (1946-51), the Academie Julian (1953-54), and finally in the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in 1957.
Since 1951, he has participated in more the 150 group exhibitions and 31 solo exhibitions. His works are in the collections of several high-profile institutes i.e. national Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. Birla Academy Of Fine Arts, Calcutta, Parliament House, New Delhi.
Arun Khopkar’s film on Sabavala’s life and art Colours of Absence won a national award in 1994. Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai exhibited his last solo show ‘Ricorso’ in 2008. In 2010, his landscape Casuarina line fetched Rs. 17 million in Saffron art auction.
His painting Vespers 1 was sold for Rs. 21 million at Bonhams sale in London.
He was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1977.
